Photographer and small business owner, Jaquarius Wilson, has carved out a unique place in his Starkville, MS market. At 24 years old, he doesn’t just do photography, he is also a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., and a former Track & Field athlete for Mississippi State University. The entrepreneur’s 1 year old company, Beyond Real Moments, specializes in creating family-friendly photo shoots for his clients. He creates this by cultivating the best experience while providing high quality pictures that will last a lifetime.
Before launching Beyond Real Moments, Wilson did his research and prepared to put himself out there as a businessman. A photographer by trade, he reached out to various friends and acquaintances, and talked to them about his work and drive to create his own business. He asked them what they thought of his photography, and everyone agreed he had an eye for being behind the camera. He began to pitch his brand and brand name, which is how he came across Beyond Real Moments, where he also coined the slogan, “We don’t just take pictures, we capture MOMENTS”.
Wilson began taking pictures of friends and family in local settings, sporting events, and graduations to promote his skills. Being in his early 20s, he discovered that there was a need for photography services around him, and he then realized that people are willing to pay someone to take exceptional photos of them. This business, which has projected more than 50+ clients since its birth in October 2018, in Wilson’s apartment.
A business like Wilson’s offers photography that focuses on more than one style of pictures, and is growing as his business grows. Some of his more popular photography includes maternity shoots, graduation shoots, and portraiture shoots.
“Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and don’t be afraid to ask questions,” says Wilson. “Consistency with marketing, photo editing, and posting on social media is one of the struggles I have dealt with while starting my business.”
One of the advantages of starting a photography business is the ease of identifying your potential customer base, since you can target so many people. Although this is true, obtaining financing for photography jobs can be harder. Wilson first had to figure out what is the ideal price to charge a person seeking photography, without lessening his worth. One of his disadvantages was feeling like he was worth more than what he charged, at the expense of accommodating to the struggles of those around him. Most students do not understand the time, money, and dedication it takes to have great quality work. One of his goals is to maintain and create a value of the prices he offers, because he would like for his business to be a steady flow of income for him someday.
“I want people to know that I enjoy having fun, and motivating people. My friends know I fill the room with vibes and bring a genuine smile to the atmosphere. I do everything that I love, and I love doing photography.”
